OTHER HEALTH BENEFITS
Many of you guys probably eat meat and drink beer and consume protein shakes, all of which are highly acidic. An acidic diet promotes inflammation, and over the long term, it can lead to heart disease, various cancers, bad skin, poor digestion, bloating, and stunted hair growth. Among these, the biggie is heart disease.
Heart disease is the still the chief killer in the United States. The Western diet, which is laced with toxins, saturated fat, and cholesterol from meat, dairy, and fast foods, is largely at fault. Meat happens to be one of the most acidic foods you can eat, and men eat a lot of it. Depending on how it’s prepared, it may be loaded with sauces, salt, sugar, and other preservatives. Unless it’s raised organically, it may also contain hormones that can upset the ability to burn fat. Replace all those meaty, fatty foods with fruits and vegetables. They’re full of detoxifying antioxidants and phytochemicals that protect the heart and its arteries. Additionally, they create an alkaline environment in your body, promoting muscle repair, recuperation, and growth. Plus, plant foods contain no saturated fat or cholesterol.
Don’t worry about protein, either; on my plan, you’ll get plenty in the form of beans, legumes, quinoa, and eggs. I know this might not sound ideal, but trust me that even though you might miss your meat, by the end you will feel better than you probably ever have before. I’m not trying to convert you to being a vegetarian or vegan; that is a personal choice. You won’t eat meat during the detox, but afterward, you can—in moderation. I’ll show you how to reintroduce high-quality organic meats back into your meals.
Now on to beer. It is high in sugar (like a lot of alcoholic beverages) and can thus trigger sugar cravings. Give in to those cravings, and you’ll end up taking in too many empty calories. Plus, the hops in beer are high in phytoestrogens, according to a 2004 report in Drug Metabolism and Disposition. Phytoestrogens are natural compounds that mimic the female hormone estrogen in the body. I mention this only because when men take in estrogen, it can potentially lead to feminizing effects such as “man boobs.” I know you don’t want those! Beer may also deplete your body of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus, which are essential to muscle contraction, relaxation, and growth.
Are you drinking a lot of protein shakes to try to build muscle mass? Bad strategy! As I stated earlier, the problem with most of these supplements is that they’re highly processed and include dairy products, sugar, and/or fake sugar. High levels of toxins contribute to weight gain, colds, allergies, blemishes, headaches, and poor immune defenses. Dairy foods are mucus-forming, too. They also slow down liver function, cause bloating, and promote snoring.
Still not convinced? Consider your lifestyle. Are you a coffee drinker? When you wake up in the morning do you head straight for that cup of joe, then subsist on
